North Vancouver Boot Camp Shares 50 Fat Loss Tips

1.    Train using the most “bang for your buck,” multi-joint lifts like squats, deadlifts, bench press, chin-ups, and Olympic lifts as we do at our bootcamp in north vancouver called The Maker's Body Boot Camp.

2.    Use very short rest periods (10 to 60 seconds) to trigger the greatest growth hormone response (another strategy we implement at boot camp). See point below why increasing growth hormone is so important for fat loss.
3.     Vary the tempo of lifting phases and rest periods to provide new stimulus for the body to adapt.

4.    To get lean fast, use a rep range between 8 to 12 reps over multiple sets/cycles with a load that limits you to between 8 to 12 reps maximum.

5.    Train to create an anabolic response. Increasing growth hormone is the priority because of its significant lipolytic (fat burning) effects.

6.    Perform circuit training with little rest between sets for maximal growth hormone response.

7.    For gradual fat loss over a longer period, include strength cycles that favor testosterone release with heavier loads (up to 95 percent 1RM), slightly longer rest (2 to 3 minutes), and lots of sets.

8.    Work harder. If you’re not getting results, you’re not working hard enough. I knew you would love that one ;)

9.    Give priority to training the anaerobic energy system over the aerobic system when strength training and conditioning. This is the metabolic conditioning workouts we do in our north vancouver boot camp where we combine strength, cardio and core training all in one workout for the ultimate 3-in-1 workout.

10.    Do high-intensity sprint intervals for conditioning, i.e. Peak 8 sprints. Peak 8 sprints are where you go all-out for 30 seconds either on a stationary bike, elliptical machine, rower, treadmill or outdoors on a hill and then rest 90 seconds, then repeat. Start with two sprints and add one sprint per week until you reach 8. I encourage clients to perform these on off boot camp days.

11.    Be as active as possible in daily life. Move more: Take regular brisk walks during the day, always take the stairs, park far away in any parking lot, or do your own yard work.

12.    Do relaxing physical activity instead of sitting in front of a screen: stretching, foam rolling, martial arts, or walking.

13.    Eliminate all processed foods from your diet—don’t eat them ever.

14.    Eliminate all trans-fats from your diet such as margarine and shortening—they MUST be removed from the diet.

15.    Don’t avoid fat. Research shows that people with diets with 30 to 50 percent coming from smart fats have higher androgens (fat burning hormones) and lower body fat. Yes you read that right: fats are good to help you lose fat :). See list below.

Good Fats (only use these in your diet)
Fish Oil/Krill Oil
Avocadoes
Extra-virgin olive oil (excellent oil but DO NOT use for cooking, use it raw on salads and after a meal is cooked)
Virgin coconut oil (also use for cooking and frying)
Butter (also use for cooking and frying, preferably organic and raw if you can find it)
Nuts (and nut butters) and seeds (except peanuts)
Egg yolks (from organic, free-range, omega-3 eggs)
Cream (preferably from organic, grass-fed sources)

Bad Fats (avoid all these in your diet)
All vegetable oils (corn, canola, safflower, sunflower, soy, etc.)
All trans fat

16.     Eat smart fat, favoring the omega-3 fats that come from fish, krill oil and wild meats.

17.    Take fish oil to boost omega-3 fat intake and ensure your omega-3 to omega-6 fat intake is balanced.

18.    Eat a diet with high-quality protein—organic meats will provide the largest “bang for your buck” protein. For high-quality, undenatured whey protein made from grass-fed cows without hormones, antibiotics or pesticides use Isagenix supplements such as: IsaPro (vanilla protein powder), IsaLean Shakes and/or Bars (meal replacement shakes and bars) and IsaLean Pro (meal replacement shake similar to the IsaLean Shake but with more protein).

Good Proteins (only use these in your diet)
Beef (ground or steak)
Bison (Buffalo)
Cheese (cottage cheese, cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, etc.)
Deer/Venison
Egg (fresh organic, free-range, omega-3, DO NOT use processed, dried egg powders)
Beef Jerky (read the label as some contain high carbs and preservatives such as nitrites and nitrates)
Pork Tenderloin
Fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel, shrimp, tuna, halibut, cod, sea bass, flounder, lobster, crab)
Protein Powder (preferably from a source where the cows have been grass-fed and where no pesticides, herbicides or hormones have been used as in Isagenix IsaPro)
Chicken Breast or Thigh
Turkey Breast or Thigh
Yogurt (preferably organic and non-homogenized)
Tofu (important: must be from fermented soybeans)

19. Be consistent each and every week. Don't do the "flash in the pan" approach to weight loss. Find the right program and be committed and stick with it.

20. Have someone coach/monitor you and your progress. Just like in sports, business, school, etc. we have coaches, mentors and teachers to help us along in reaching our goals, its the same with weight loss and your health and fitness goals.

21.    Eliminate wheat and avoid grains in favor of vegetables. See list below.

Good Starches/Carbs (only use these in your diet)
White rice
Quinoa
Tubers: white and sweet potatoes, yams

Starches/Carbs to Avoid (avoid all these in your diet)
All grains including wheat and wheat based products (i.e. bread, wheat flour, pastries, pies, biscuits, pasta, etc.), oats, spelt, kamut, granola, etc.
Beans and legumes

22.    Raise resting metabolic rate (the amount of calories the body burns at rest) by eating a higher protein diet with 15 to 25 percent of the diet coming from high-quality protein.

23.    Eliminate all high-glycemic carbs and eat only low-glycemic vegetables and berries.

24.    Eat an antioxidant-rich diet to prevent inflammation, which leads to fat gain. Try kale, broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, berries, pomegranates, and cherries.

25.    Non-green veggies that help you lose fat are colored peppers, eggplant, garlic, onions, mushrooms, hearts of palm, spaghetti squash, and water chestnuts.

26.    Drink a lot of water (at LEAST 3 liters a day) to stay hydrated and help detox the body. Recommended water to drink is Kangen Water (8.5-9.5 pH). This is the water we use at boot camp. This water is ionized, alkalized and high in antioxidants for optimal health and wellness. If you would like a free 2 week supply to try it out to see the difference it makes in your body compared to regular acidic, chlorinated tap, filtered or bottled water, don't hesitate to let me know but please do let me know first, don't just take it. Important note: Cancer and disease thrive in an acidic environment so drinking high-quality Kangen alkalized water will optimize your health and help your body become more alkaline and an unsuitable environment for disease. For more info email me or call me at 604.626.2342.

27.    Avoid alcohol, juice, soda, and sports drinks. Stick to water, tea, and coffee.

28.    For a radical approach, eliminate all alcohol. If alcohol can’t be eliminated, Sardinian and Spanish red wines are the best worst option.

29.    Try acupuncture—studies have shown it can aid in treating obesity.

30.    Make sure your vitamin D level is over 40 ng/ml. Take vitamin D if not. Recommended dose is 8000 IU per day.

31.    Take a probiotic (Genestra Brand's HMF Intensive or Forte) to improve your gut health and your overall health for that matter. Also, add fermented foods to your diet as it's key for digestive and gut health. Have 2-3 servings per day. Ex. kefir, yogurt, sauerkraut (unpasteurized), kvass, kombucha tea, kimchi, miso, natto, tempeh, pickles, olives, etc. (these are important for improved digestion, gut health and a strong immune system). Start small (1-2 tsp. per day) and increase in amount as well as number of times per day over a few days/weeks as the good probiotic bacteria in fermented food will be killing off the pathegenic bacteria and yeasts but we want to do it slowly as if you kill them too fast you can experience the "die off" effect where you will feel worse as the bad bacteria and yeasts release toxins into your bloodstream when they die.

32.    Make sure your magnesium level is up to par. Scientists suggest 500 mg of magnesium a day.

33.    Take a liquid zinc test to see if you can taste zinc. If not, you are deficient and should take zinc to speed fat loss.

34.    Don’t buy cheap, poor quality supplements because they will do more harm than good if they are tainted with heavy metals or pollutants. For high-quality supplements free of artifical sweeteners, stimulants, etc. choose Isagenix. For more info click here: Isagenix.

35.    Take B vitamins, especially if you eat a high-protein diet or take BCAAs because the extra amino acids take away from the pool of available B vitamins needed for detox.

36.    Drink coffee or take caffeine before workouts to increase fat burning and work capacity—research shows we will self-select heavier loads if we take caffeine before training.

37.    Drink organic green tea to elevate fat burning and aid in detoxifying the body.

38.    Take carnitine to help the body use fat for fuel and increase time to exhaustion when training hard.

39.    Take the amino acid taurine because it lowers the stress hormone cortisol and helps the body digest fat.

40.    Take R-form alpha lipoic acid because it supports detox and recovery from training.

41.    Use the herb fenugreek with meals to improve insulin sensitivity and energy use.

43.    Limit fructose (especially high fructose corn syrup) in the diet because it gets in the way of losing belly fat.

44.    Never eat fructose before workouts because it blunts fat burning and lowers metabolic rate.

45.    Avoid milk before workouts because it is very “insulinotropic,” meaning it causes persistently high insulin levels that make you burn less energy.

46.    Don’t drink caffeine after workouts because it may raise cortisol at the point where you need to clear it for the best fat-burning and recovery effect.

47.    Eat high-quality protein for breakfast. Avoid cereal and all processed foods.

48.    Eliminate all sugar from your diet. It’s way more trouble than it’s worth if you want to lose fat.

49.    Make an effort to get enough sleep. An early-to-bed, early-to-rise sleep pattern has been shown to improve body composition.

50.    Know that you have complete control over what you put in your mouth. No one ever ate anything by accident.

Below is the interview with Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride. Please listen to it and if you can, I HIGHLY recommend implementing what she teaches.

I hope that helped.

The Government Conspiracy To Make Us Fat

This is a guest post by Dr. Saman Bakhtiar

In Washington, DC and everywhere else it seems as if the government, nutritionists, medical doctors and "established" organizations are hell-bent on making Americans FATTER by spewing utterly ridiculous and completely unsubstantiated advice about how to eat and lose weight.

Here are some of their most popular nutrition-related weight-loss myths:

Myth #1: A calorie is a calorie

First, let me ask you a commonsense weight loss question - if you had two identical twin sisters and you put them both on very different 1,500 calories diets. The first one ate all of her calories from McDonald's and the second one gets all of her calories from lean, healthy meats, fish, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables, seeds, and a small amount of fresh dairy products. Do YOU think they'd look the same at the end of a year?

We have actually known that all calories are NOT created equal for at least 50 years, and we keep getting the same results over and over and over again.

Take this study for example. All participants were on hypocaloric diets (less calories than they need). All did the same amount of activity, ate the same number of calories, etc. The ONLY difference was where those calories came from. The results speak for themselves.

Group A: 1000 calories at 90% fat: lost 0.9lbs per day

Group B: 1000 calories at 90% protein: 0.6lbs per day

Group C: 1000 calories at 90% carbs - actually gained some weight (not really significant though).

We keep repeating these types of studies and we keep getting the exact same results

Why do our so-called authorities in Washington, DC keep selling us the same raft of lies? That is probably a book in and of itself, but here's the gist: Official nutrition recommendations are political and financial decisions - who made campaign contributions (it is DC)? Who's lobbying for what recommendations? What industry group does this scientist work for? Who paid for the research? Was it the same company that will make money off of its favorable results?

The list of questions goes on and on and on. Plus, there's also just plain old stubbornness - people like tradition, they like to do what they've always done.

Rarely are official nutrition recommendations the result of years of practical experience about what works and what doesn't, and a thorough and unbiased review of research. The people who make official recommendations do NOT usually work one-on-one with people helping them to get weight loss results. If your mortgage payment doesn't depend on your ability to produce results, then I do not care what you have to say.

Myth #2: High protein, moderate carbohydrate diets are unsafe

There are at least 15 years of peer-reviewed clinical research saying that there is absolutely no risk posed to normal, healthy people from short or long-term exposure to a high-protein diet. In fact, higher protein/moderate carbohydrate diets (I didn't say none or low carbohydrate) have consistently been shown to outperform low-fat/high-carb/low-protein diets for weight (fat)-loss, in the treatment of diabetes, and for heart health.

Myth #3: Juice is healthy

The federal government in Washington, DC and nutritionists would have you believe that drinking a glass of juice is the same as eating a piece of fruit. Well, the fact of the matter is that a glass of juice is about as nutritious as a glass of Pepsi.

A. To make a small 8 oz. glass of OJ, you must extract all of the sugar from FIVE oranges. Ounce for ounce, OJ has the same amount of sugar as Pepsi. Is it better because it's "natural"? NO! Cocaine is a plant extract, is it now a health food? All sugar comes from plants anyway. There is NOTHING more fattening than a bunch of sugar.

B. In the process of extracting the juice virtually ALL of the vitamins are lost due to exposure to the air and from the chemicals used to increase extraction yields from the fruits.

Conclusion: all sugar, no vitamins - not a health food. Instead of OJ, eat an actual orange. It has fiber, tastes good and it will make you feel full (unlike the juice, so it is really empty calories that your body won't register as having eaten them). Bureaucrats in Washington, DC don't necessarily have your best interests in mind when writing policy, sometimes they are trying to help sell more oranges because you can drink far more than you can eat.

Myth #4: Moderate drinking is healthy

Doctors love to say this one. They say it for two reasons, both of which are misleading at best:

Reason #1 is there was a large study of studies (meta analysis) that showed that people who drank moderately lived longer than those who did not drink at all. There's a HUGE problem with this study, former alcoholics and people who were so sick that they could not drink were lumped into the group of people who CHOSE not to drink. They took the average life expectancy of all those different types of people to get their "data."

If you're so sick that you can't drink alcohol, you probably don't have long to live. And being an alcoholic is VERY hard on your body and will probably shorten your lifespan.

Reason #2 is that alcohol thins your blood. Well, so does water and fish oil, and those have ONLY positive side effects. Whereas alcohol IS a toxin, and it does stimulate both fat storage and muscle loss - that is a bad combination for weight (fat)-loss.

Conclusion: Drinking in moderation is something that you do because you like it, not because it has any health benefits whatsoever. "But red wine is healthy" you say. The good stuff in red wine comes from the grapes that it was made out of - grapes. You can just eat the grapes and rid yourself of the alcohol.

7 Exercises You DON'T Want To Do

In the past, I’ve shared my top exercises for rapid fat loss and muscle gain, featuring a host of multi-joint, compound movements for your upper body (e.g. push-ups, pull-ups, rows, dips, etc.), lower body (squats, deadlifts, lunges, etc.), and core (plank holds and rotational core exercises). These “many muscle” exercises provide the biggest bang for your buck during your workouts to generate maximum results in minimal time. Even better are total body exercises like a curl to squat to press or a squat thrust variation that takes the meaning of a whole body workout to a whole new level.

But, I think we’ll switch it up a bit today and focus on the exercises you DON'T want to add to your training routine...well at least NOT on a regular basis. The following list features movements that I never use (except for the leg press as there are some exceptions)- movements that deliver less than optimal results and flat our hurt people - movements that have far greater risk than reward:

The 7 Exercises You DON'T Want To Do

1.) Abs Machine

Crunches and sit-ups only promote excessive flexion of the lumbar spine and tend to cause neck and back pain. What’s worse than crunches or sit-ups? Doing a similar movement with added weight in a machine that only trains your body in an unnatural front to back motion in a seated position!

Yes, abs machines, like crunches and sit-ups, do make your feel your abdominal muscles, but there are far better ways to accomplish this without the high risk of short and long-term injury to your spine.

Remember, the true function of your core is stabilization, both static and dynamic - to be able to maintain a neutral, straight-line position from your hips to your shoulders in all 3 planes of movement (front to back, side to side, and rotational) no matter what the external stimulus may be.

21st Century Training Upgrade: For rock hard, athletic abs focus on plank stabilization exercises like front, side, and back planks and ground based rotational core work like chops variations and upper body twists.

2.) Back Machine

Well, if I don't advocate the abs machine, how do you think I’m going to feel about the back machine? I mean this is an exercise you DON'T want to do for so a number of reasons.

First of all, people already use too much “back” on most movements because of tight hips and inactive/weak glutes. Thus, I prefer to focus more on hip extension movements that strengthen your butt rather than continually overloading the spinal erectors. Plus, adding in corrective stretching for the hip flexor complex, the hip rotators, and the hamstring complex that opens up your hips and alleviates excessive spinal flexion and compressions is literally exactly what the doctor ordered.

Second of all, just like the abs machine, this exercise trains your body in one plane of movement in a fixed path and as a results doesn’t work your key stabilizer muscles that should be worked at the same time.

Lastly, the way that most people perform this movement in such an out of control manner for speed just makes matters worse.

21st Century Training Upgrade:
For a strong, stable back focus on deadlift, good morning, and hip extensions variations while simultaneously focusing on the corrective stretching and self-massage of the Lumbo-Pelvic-Hip (LPH) complex. A prone cobra, or airplane as it is sometimes called, is also a great exercise to improve spinal erector endurance while simultaneously improving scapular strength and stability.

3.) Leg Extension Machine

A colleague of mine, BJ Gaddour, had a run in with this exercise. When he first started lifting weights as a stubborn 8th grader who did whatever it took to keep pushing his training loads up, he abused this exercise like few others.

He remembers maxing out the rack at 200 lbs and doing spastic sets of 20+ reps where the whole universal machine that the leg extension apparatus was attached to would shake like an episode of soul train.

Fast forward to his senior year in college as an over-trained football player who had 4 knee surgeries under his belt by the age of 22. Not too much fun, trust him on this. Exercises like this prematurely ended his football career he believes and limited his potential to be a great, healthy player, instead of a good, but injured player.

Here’s the bottom line with this exercise - it will potentially wreak havoc on your knees! The excessive compressions on your patella will without a doubt result in the brake down of articular cartilage which will in turn result in a bunch of arthroscopic knee surgeries to remove loose bodies and eventually full blown crippling arthritis. Avoid this machine as best you can!

21st Century Training Upgrade: For strong, stable knees, focus on both knee-dominant (lunge, step-up, and single-leg squat variations) AND hip-dominant single-leg exercises (single-leg hip extension, deadlift, and good morning variations) to prevent strength imbalances between limbs AND to prevent strength imbalances between your front and back thighs and your inner and outer thighs.

4.) Fly Machine

If abused and not performed properly, this exercise can led to tears of the pec muscles and destroy your rotator cuff, so your best bet is to avoid this all together unless you are working with someone that knows what to look for and DOESN'T prescribe this exercise frequently.

Again, the use of a machine versus doing a dumbbell fly alternative eliminates the use of the key stabilizer muscles surrounding your shoulders. Furthermore, the common male desire to use maximum weight to build a chest he can be proud of typically results in overuse injuries like shoulder impingement or biceps tendonitis.

21st Century Training Upgrade: For strong, stable shoulders focus on performing an equal amount of pushing and pulling exercises. In fact, more pulling exercises initially may be a good idea if you find yourself heavily internally rotated and hunchbacked from years of focusing on your beach muscles (chest, abs, and biceps) while neglecting your rear shoulders and upper/mid muscles or through years of a lack of activity and much sitting. The best pushing exercise you can do is any push-up variation as it not only safely trains the entire front side of your body but also engages your upper back musculature in a way that the bench press does not. Furthermore, every year people die from bench pressing, but there has never been a reported death from performing a push-up!

5.) Elliptical Machine

Here's the thing - if you are really, really overweight and haven’t exercised in over a decade, then I think an elliptical has some use. But, other than that, I think it’s relatively useless. But to be honest I rarely put a client on an elliptical and would MUCH rather start them walking on a treadmill.

Yes, it is a low-impact alternative to running on a treadmill (don't start with running as it's an advanced exercise that most peoples bodies are NOT ready for), but there is very little range of motion during the movement and does not burn nearly as many calories as the machine claims it does.

Furthermore, the elliptical is not a good machine to do intervals on because it promotes excessive hyperextension of the knee. This can easily result in injury at high levels of speed and resistance.

Think about it - what’s the first machine people who are new to cardio exercise jump on? The elliptical! Why? Because it’s much easier!

If you've convinced yourself that the elliptical is a good option because you have bad knees. Try this: perform a ton of corrective stretching and self-massage on your front/inner/outer hips and thighs to improve my tissue health, and work on hip and ankle mobility to take pressure off of your knees so that you can get back to running pain-free or doing whatever it is you enjoy doing pain-free.

At the end of the day, if you can read a magazine while on an elliptical or on any piece of equipment for that matter, how much benefit do you really think you will get from this in regards to changing the way you look and feel?

21st Century Training Upgrade: For optimal results during your cardio training, you must focus on intervals. They are more effective AND efficient for your time and burn more body fat for hours and hours AFTER you finish than aerobics and also result in greater improvements in overall conditioning than long, slow cardio. If you are overweight/de-conditioned and/or have joint issues, the best place to start an interval training program is on a upright, stationary bike.

If you need to rock your cardio equipment-free and/or at home or on the road, use body weight based exercises like jumping jacks, stationary running, split jumps, etc.

6.) Abductor/Adductor Combo

Women all over the world seem convinced that this exercise can some how help them rid themselves of the thunder thigh/cellulite situation.

Have you ever asked: “What exercises can I do to get rid of this flab inside my leg?”

Come on now, you know that spot reduction is a myth by now, right? [Note: there is statistical significance to it but in the real world it doesn't amount to much]. Seriously, no amount of direct inner or other hip-thigh work will burn that ugly fat covering that toned musculature everyone wants to see so let it go.

So the first thing you need to do is clean up all of the junk carbs in your diet and start consuming lean proteins, healthy fats, and fruits and veggies while plugging water like a fish.

Then you need to get off this machine and get real with a total body workout!

21st Century Training Upgrade: The best exercises for your inner and outer-hip thigh will come from band-resisted hip walk variations, side plank variations, and any and all single-leg exercises, especially lateral lunges. A good lateral lunge is the Valslide Lateral Lunge that simultaneously stretches and strengthens your hip musculature.

7.) Leg Press Machine

It never ceases to amaze me how we all look for the easy way out when it comes to working out. It’s clear why people prefer to leg press - they get to lay or sit on their behinds depending on the exact type of leg press machine being used. [Note: there are a few exceptions to this rule so its not that this exercise is completely bad however it can be dangerous is not done properly as some people will go to low and thus round their lower backs exposing their discs to a herniation or bulge.]

If you want both nice legs and a flat midsection then you need to squat! And yes, you can’t squat lying down, sorry!

But squats are tough because they require a whole body effort, an effort most people aren’t willing to put in explaining why they get sub par results form their workouts.

The leg press could very well be a major contributing cause for the rapidly increasing number of bulging and/or herniated discs among exercise enthusiasts (as mentioned above). People always use way too much weight and use poor form resulting in brutally compressive forces on the spine.

Seriously, if you are opting to leg press over squatting, then you don’t know squat, pun intended ;)

21st Century Training Upgrade: The best (and safest) exercises for your lower body are a healthy combination of double-leg and single-leg exercises using free weights and body weight based exercises. Be sure to perform an equal amount of knee-dominant lower body exercises (e.g. squats and lunges) and hip-dominant lower body exercises (e.g. deadlifts and single-leg hip extensions) to make your knees, hips, and back bulletproof. In fact, most people are very knee-dominant and could benefit to start by performing a greater number of hip-dominant movements to balance out their lower body musculature.

You’ll notice one common trend among all of these exercises listed above: they all involve MACHINES!

Get off those machines and focus on functional movements using free weights, bands, stability balls, etc. Not only will you ramp up your fat-burning and muscle-building pursuits, but more importantly you won’t end up hunchbacked in a wheel chair by the time you turn 50 ;)
