As I've been saying, protein...

As I've been saying, protein should be your best friend when it comes to what you eat.

Tony Gentilcore, a fellow fitness professional, sent this link to me regarding an interesting study that recently came out showing the power of protein to keep hunger at bay.

In a nutshell, the researchers gave 16 people three different beverages, each with varying levels of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. They took blood samples before the first beverage, then every 20 minutes for six hours afterward, measuring ghrelin (a hormone which regulates hunger) levels in each sample.

Results concluded that proteins were the best suppressor of ghrelin and kept subjects more sated. Conversely, carbohydrates initially suppressed ghrelin, but levels rebounded quite quickly and more than doubled not long afterwards. According to the researchers, carbohydrates eventually made people even hungrier than before they had eaten. Thus ultimately leading to people eating more (and probably more of the wrong foods.

This past Tuesday, at a health seminar, I stressed this very thing. People need to be consuming more protein than they are. It is more often than not people are eating far too little protein than too much.

Remember it doesn't have to be a huge full course meal. Try things like 1/2 cup of yogurt, 4 oz. of cottage cheese, a handful of chicken, a hard boiled egg or two, a handful of nuts, a scoop of protein powder, etc. The key is to get some protein in, preferably every 3 hours. If you have to, bring it with you when you go out. If it's not with you, you'll probably gravitate toward refined carbohydrates.

So when in doubt, eat protein.
