Goal Achievement for the New Year


I hope you had a wonderful Christmas as I did. All of my family was in town my mom, 2 sisters, 2 brothers, and the wife of one of my brother's. We had a great time of really not doing much, but that's what Christmas is all about at our house, just lounging around the fire, maybe watching a movie, playing chess (my brother and sister had some serious matches this year), spending time with each other, and eating some good food...cheesecake included (gotta make some exceptions for Christmas right?). My brother and I whipped up the cheesecake this year, as well as last, and boy was it good. In my mind for cheesecake to be worth it its gotta be like 10 pounds for the entire cake and feel like a meal after having a piece.

All in all the break was good as I hope it was for you too.

Today I want to talk to you about goal setting or as Dax Moy, author of TheMagicHundred, states Goal Achievement.

If you really want to achieve your goals, whatever they may be, for 2008, you will want to answer these few questions. Again this can apply to any field or area in life.

1.) WHAT do you want, i.e. what's your goal? Please be very specific, i.e. what exactly is it and in what time frame (not what you will settle for or what seems realistic, the bigger the goal is, the bigger the challenge, the more you will work toward it).


2.) WHY do you want what you want? In other words, WHY is this important to you? Be brutally honest and truthful.


3.) WHAT are you willing to do to make this a reality for you?


4.) WHAT things are you NOT willing to do?


5.) HOW will you feel when this is accomplished?


6. ) Do you KNOW the price to pay?


7.) Are you willing to pay the price?


Lastly write a truth diary. List all the thing in your life that you know are not moving you towards your goal(s) and in fact are hindering you. As well get rid of the get-out-of-jail-free cards and just stick with it, don’t give yourself and out. Tell as many people as you can (obviously be selective of the ones you tell as some will just discourage and drain you) as this will help as if you know that others know about it you won't as easily be able to back out of it.

In the area of health and fitness, Dax talks about the biggest mistake people make is being inconsistent in reaching their goals. So if your goal is to lose 120 pounds, be very specific and answer the questions above. For question two really peel away the layers of WHY you want it. The deeper you get to the core reason the more committed and CONSISTENT you will be in working towards it.

Whatever your goal is find some to make it a reality. If its losing weight, find a trainer to put together a program for you and to coach you along the way particularly if you are doing it on your own. If its business find those in your area of business who have had success and glean from them as much as you can and if possible find someone to mentor you. If its being a better mom or dad read as many good books as you can and talk with mom and dads who have had success. Whatever the goal find someone to help make it a reality.

Merry Christmas and a Quick Bodyweight Circuit to Burn Fat!

I hope you have a blessed Christmas with family and friends. Have a great time and enjoy the desserts (as it is Christmas and we should feast) but remember to go easy as you don't want to feel bloated and gross and regret it the next day.

Below is a simple bodyweight circuit you can do every other day over Christmas to keep your metabolism up and your body burning fat and building muscle. Description for the exerices is below. If you have any questions please let me know.

-perform only 3 total circuit. Don’t stop after each exercise and go one after another until you finish the 6th one and rest 30 sec before starting the next circuit.

-remember to get all the equipment you need out and ready as you don’t want to waste time organizing things during the circuit.

1. Prisoner Squat:

Place your hands clasped behind your neck. Squeeze your shoulder blades together. Stand with your feet just greater than shoulder-width apart. Start the movement at the hip joint. Push your hips backward and “sit back into a chair”. Make your hips go back as far as possible. Squat as deep as possible, but keep your low back tensed in a neutral position. Push with your glutes, hamstrings, and quadriceps to return to the start position. Do NOT round your lower back.

2. Kneeling Push-ups:

Assume a push-up position on your knees on the floor. Place your hands slightly wider than shoulder width apart. Descend down as low as you can go and push yourself back up. Keep your back straight and hips inline with your body. Don’t let your elbows flare out.

3.Stick-ups:

Stand with your back against a wall. Your feet should be 6 inches away from the wall and your butt, upper back, and head should all be in contact with the wall at all times in the exercise. Stick your hands up overhead. Try to keep your shoulders, elbows, and wrists in contact with the wall at all times. Slide your arms down the wall and tuck your elbows into your sides. This should bring your shoulder blades down and together. You should feel a strong contraction in the muscles between your shoulder blades as well as the shoulder muscles. Again, try to keep everything in contact with the wall. From the bottom position, try to slowly slide your arms up until they are straight and in a "stick-em up" position. Again, try to keep everything in contact with the wall. Try to improve your range of motion in this exercise each week. The goal is to improve shoulder mobility and postural control.

4.Plank:

Assume a push-ups position on your forearms and toes on the floor. Keeps your back straight and your hips in line with your body. Hold this position for as long as you can.

5. Bulgarian Split Squat:

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Place the instep of one foot on a bench. Step forward with the other foot, taking a slightly larger than normal step. Contract your glutes, brace your abs and keep your spine in a neutral position. Lower your body until your front thigh is parallel to the ground. Keep your upper body upright and your lower back flat. Push up to the upright position. Stay in a split-squat stance. Perform all reps for one leg and then switch.

Why Excess Abdominal Fat Is More Deadly Than You Think

Did you know that the vast majority of people in this day and age have excess abdominal fat? The first thing that most people think of is that their extra abdominal fat is simply ugly, is covering up their abs from being visible, and makes them self conscious about showing off their body.However, what most people don’t realize is that excess abdominal fat in particular, is not only ugly, but is also a dangerous risk factor to your health. Scientific research has clearly demonstrated that although it is unhealthy in general to have excess body fat throughout your body, it is also particularly dangerous to have excess abdominal fat.

There are two types of fat that you have in your abdominal area. The first type that covers up your abs from being visible is called subcutaneous fat and lies directly beneath the skin and on top of the abdominal muscles.The second type of fat that you have in your abdominal area is called visceral fat, and that lies deeper in the abdomen beneath your muscle and surrounding your organs. Visceral fat also plays a role in giving certain men that “beer belly” appearance where their abdomen protrudes excessively but at the same time, also feels sort of hard if you push on it. Both subcutaneous fat and visceral fat in the abdominal area are serious health risk factors, but science has shown that having excessive visceral fat is even more dangerous than subcutaneous fat. Both of them greatly increase the risk your risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, sleep apnea, various forms of cancer, and other degenerative diseases.

Part of the reason visceral fat is particularly dangerous is that it apparently releases more inflammatory molecules into your body on a consistent basis.If you care about the quality of your life and your loved ones, reducing your abdominal fat should be one of your TOP priorities! There’s just no way around it. Besides, a side-effect of finally getting rid of all of that excessive ugly abdominal fat is that your stomach will flatten out, and if you lose enough stomach fat, you will be able to visibly see those six pack abs that everyone wants.

So what gets rid of extra abdominal fat? Is there actually a REAL solution beyond all of the gimmicks and hype that you see in ads and on commercials for “miracle” fat loss products?

Q & A

Q:
You know those kids vitamins like flinstones or whatever, I know they are not the best for the kids but I have some so I will just finish what I have but I am wondering if there is a child vitamin that you recommend.

A:
Good question (sorry for taking so long to answer). Without going into too much detail I would say don't use those or give them to your child.

Some vitamins, namely vitamin C, B12, A, and E, are manufactured in China which has less than ideal safety regulations which is evident with the recent pet food scandel and reported instances of toxic food and toothpaste. That being said I would agree with Dr. Mercola that a vast majority of your vitamins and minerals should come from the food you eat. Like he says, You can’t “make up” for a poor diet by simply adding vitamin supplements.

It reminds me of the analogy of the two boats. Boat 1 is build with good strong wood and golden nails to hold the wood together. Boat 2 on the other hand is made with rotten, junk wood but is roughly held together by golden nails. Which boat will survive the turmoil out at sea? Boat 1 of course.

This is similar to our bodies. If we eat junk food, processed food (rotten wood), and very little fruit, vegetables, and protein but take a good multivitamin here and there (the golden nails) our bodies will be like that ship out at sea, not being able to resist the attacks of life. We need to build our bodies like Boat 1 with good "wood" i.e. food and then as extra "insurance" use the "golden nails" i.e. a multivitamin/mineral.

Water or Coke?

I got this from a peer of mine Dax Moy in the UK at www.daxmoy.co.uk and I thought my readers would be interested in it.

Next time you have to decide between water and coke, remember this...

WATER

1. 75% of the UK population are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half world population.) (I bet this would apply to North America.)

2. In 37% of all the UK population, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger. (I bet this would apply to North America.)

3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

COKE

1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.

3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.

8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.

2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous Material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.

3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

Tyron's Soon-To-Be-Famous Vegetarian Dish

Watch out Rob Feenie (Vancouver's iron chef), Tyron's giving you a run for your money.

As requested by one of my clients, I'm posting the recipe for my soon-to-be-famous vegetarian dish.

Tyron's Vegetarian Dish:
-1 cup of mixed steamed veggies
-1/2 cup of organic brown rice or organic beans (soaked and cooked properly)
-1/4 of an avocado
-1/4 cup of almonds, walnuts or cashews (soaked and dry in an oven at a low temp)
-1-2 Tbsp of organic extra-virgin olive oil
-optional: 1 Tbsp of flaxseed or another seed of your choice

If you try it let me know what you think. It's simple, but good. Who said things had to be elaborate, time consuming, and complicated for things to taste good and be healthy?

Lose Weight While Sleeping!

Dr. Mark Hyman recently wrote an interesting piece on sleep and the importance of getting enough of it to help us lose weight and gain health.

He mentioned that sleep deprivation makes you fat -- AND leads to depression, pain, heart disease, diabetes, and much more.

Once patient of his in particular lost 50 pounds and lowered his blood pressure after sleeping throughout the night. His particular case involved having sleep apnea but once treated with a device to keep his airway open at night, he experienced those dramatic changes in his body.

You may not have sleep apnea however if you're like this individual and aren't sleeping adequately throughout the night, you're potentiall setting your body up for problems down the road.

Dr. Hyman also points out that when you are sleep deprived, your cortisol rises -- and so do all its harmful effects, including brain damage and dementia, weight gain, diabetes, heart attacks, high blood pressure, depression, osteoporosis, depressed immunity, and more.

Artificial Sweeteners - Don't Be Deceive Your Body is Not Mocked

Below is an excellent article written by a friend of mine on the dangers of artificial sweeteners that I think you will benefit from. If you or a friend of yours drinks this stuff (diet pop or any sugar-free gums or product) send them this info. Until everyone is not drinking this stuff you MIGHT not hear me talking about it as much.

Artificial sweeteners are not a healthy substitute for sugar and they often cause people to eat more food and gain weight. When the body detects a sweet taste, it expects carbohydrates that contain nutrition, and when the gut finds no nutrition, the message is sent to the brain to eat more in order to get the nutrition needed.

The FDA has had more complaints about Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal, Canderel, NatraSweet, Spoonfuls, DiabetiSweet) than any other food additive, and yet it is still on the GRAS list (Generally Regarded As Safe) despite its strong association with brain tumours and seizures.

It is a synthetic compound made up of Phenylalanine and Aspartic Acid held in a chemical bond by Methanol, which breaks down into Formic Acid, Formaldehyde and Diketopiperazine (DKP).

It is the DKP that is associated with brain tumours. Aspartame breaks down more quickly with heat, and as such, is worse in hot drinks, or in soda pop that may have been in the sun at some point in its journey to our fridges.

If you have ever tasted a diet drink that didn't taste sweet, you know the aspartame in it broke down into the above mentioned neurotoxins (nerve poisons). Some symptoms of aspartame toxicity include migraines, depression, seizures, attention deficit disorder, angry rages, joint pain, muscle spasm, and it can mimic diseases like MS, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia.

Symptoms like migraines may appear quickly in some people, while in others there may be no symptoms for some time. Once again, biochemical individuality plays a role in how quickly and severely people are affected.

If you or someone you care about has any of these symptoms, remove aspartame from the diet for four to six weeks before medical testing to see if the symptoms resolve, and so that the artificial sweetener won't cloud the diagnosis.

Once again, read labels, because aspartame is everywhere, including children's vitamins, cool aid type fruit drinks, diet soda pop, sugar free chewing gum, gelatin desserts, frozen desserts, fillings and toppings for baked goods, hot chocolate mixes, breath mints, yogurt, wine coolers, tea beverages, some flavoured bottled waters, some fibre cereals, cold remedies and other medications.

Sucralose, under the brand name of Splenda, is gaining in popularity as a substitute for sugar. Because this product is newer there is less research to look at, but what is there should give pause for thought.

It is advertised as being made from sugar, but that does not mean it is anything like sugar, just as water in no way resembles the oxygen and hydrogen from which it is made.

To make sucralose, three chlorine atoms are substituted for three oxygen-hydrogen groups on the sugar molecule turning it into a chlorocarbon. Chlorocarbons have been known to cause genetic, organ, immune and reproductive damage for some time, and they cause swelling of the liver as well as swelling and calcification of the kidneys. If you get any mid-back pain in the kidney area or bladder irritation after consuming Splenda, take it out of your diet immediately.

Choose healthful sweeteners like raw (unpasteurized) honey, organic maple syrup, Rapadura or stevia to sweeten your food if necessary.

Spilling the Beans on Soy

Just recently my mom showed me an article she found in The Globe and Mail on soy foods.

My initial reaction before reading it was that they're probably not going to say much, just the general politically correct stuff you normally here. You know, soy is a complete protein, its low in cholesterol (but as some of you may know cholesterol isn't bad, but in fact is good), contains fiber, high in isaflavones, good for the heart and lowers cholesterol, etc.

Once I read the article I was pleasantly surprised that a mainstream publication would write, not on the benefits of soy, but on the dangers. I've included a few of the points discussed in the article which I believe will not only benefit you, but surprise you as well.

-75 to 89 percent of soybeans grown in North America are genetically modified. GM soy is present in approximately 60 percent of processed foods - usually as filler or oil. Also soybeans are heavily laden with pesticides.

-115 degrees Celcius is the temperature to which soybeans are heated in the production of commercial soy milk in an attempt to remove trypsin inhibitors, but the phytate content remains largely intact. (Phytates block the absorption of essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and copper in the intestinal tract.)

*THIS ONE WAS A HUGE SHOCKER TO ME*
-5 is the equivalent number of birth-control pills a day that babies are fed exclusively on soy formula according to a British toxicologist's calculations. (Isaflavones, also known as phytoestrogens, produce estrogen-like effects in the body and have been linked to a number of cancers especially estrogen-related cancers.)

If you are going to eat soy, eat only organic (so its not GM and isn't laden with pesticides), fermented soy such as miso, tempeh, or natto.

How to Cook Beans Without Having the Unfriendly Gas Show Up

If you want to eliminate or at least lessen the amount of gas you get when you eat beans try this.

Step 1: Soak your beans in water and unpasteurized apple cider vinegar for at least 24 hours, preferably 36. 1 Tbsp of apple cider vinegar for every 1 cup of beans.

Step 2: Rinse the beans thoroughly and place in a stainless steel pot with enough water to cover beans.

Step 3: Bring beans to a boil then set a timer for 5 minutes and leave it boiling for that time.

Step 4: Dump out water and again rinse beans thoroughly and clean pot.

Step 5: Place beans back in pot and cover with new water.

Step 6: Bring to a boil then turn it to low and let it simmer for 45-60 minutes or until beans are soft and at your liking. Add sea salt.

Step 7 (optional): Add garlic and any other flavourings you'd like.

Step 8: Enjoy your beans in a gas-free environment!

While You Are Trying to Lose, You May Gain

A world renowned fat loss expert, Alwyn Cosgrove, wrote an interesting write up on what to expect with your weight when you start building muscle and losing fat. Remember that how you look and feel, and how much you weigh are not necessarily related at all.
I thought you'd all be interested as its something I hear quite often. Any questions please ask.


Question:
This weekend I got on a scale at a friend's house (I don't own one) and much to my disappointment, the numbers haven't budged all that much since my last weigh in several months ago. Now, my clothes fit better, I'm in better shape than I've perhaps EVER been in, I know muscle weighs more than fat, I look GREAT, etc...but those numbers scream overweight to me. They make me feel like I've made no progress at all


Answer:
First off - your clothes "fit better", you're "in better shape than you've ever been in" and you "look GREAT"... but you're disappointed solely because the bathroom scale didn't go down "All that much".


Here's something we tell clients: If we had a magic fat loss machine -- that you stepped in and pushed a button and you came out looking EXACTLY how you've always dreamed of looking and feeling - the exact dress or pant size you wanted, with the definition and muscle tone you want, at the bodyfat percentage you want - you can see your abs (if that's what you want) etc etc. Would you be interested? Of course you would!!


But what if the side effect of the fat loss machine is that it increased bone density and muscle density by 100%. So while you looked and felt better than you've ever felt before -- the scale is 50lbs higher than it's ever been. So for example a 150lb-er would come out looking amazing, but weighing 200lbs...Would that number on the scale make you not want the other results?


Now what if the machine did the reverse - you look exactly the same as you've always done, but you'd weigh 50lbs less? Would you be happy with that? Probably not right?


Just understand that how you look and feel, and how much you weigh are not necessarily related at all.The picture on the left shows the difference in size between five pounds of fat (top) and five pounds of muscle (bottom). You can see that it's a pretty big size difference.


If you add ten pounds of muscle and lose ten pounds of fat -- you're going to look like you lost 20lbs.


But the scale won't move.

Medical Doctors Are Seeing The Light On Alternative Cancer Treatments

A lady from my church (thank you Sandy) sent me a rather interesting report from John Hopkins University stating that doctors there are starting to agree that there are alternatives to cancer treatment other than chemotherapy. Thank you Lord!

I find this quite interesting as for years and years the medical community as a whole (other than a few here and there) disregarded alternative treatments and deemed those physicians that used them as quacks!

I've attached the report below. Do give it a read despite it being a bit long as I believe you will really learn something...even if its just the last point which scores and scores of people do.

Cancer Update from John Hopkins

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion.When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime.

3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like Nutrasweet, Equal,Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts.Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in colour. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soya milk cancer cells are being starved. (Tyron's comment: I don't recommend soya milk consumption).

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork.Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites,which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice(most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water- best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrified and leads to more toxic buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor ssence, Essiac,anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer cells.Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment.Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

PLEASE READ (Tyron's comment: I don't believe anyone should use a microwave due to the fact that it nukes your food and kill 97% of the antioxidants and 74-87% of the healthy polyphenols (good plant chemicals) however if you do please follow the directions below.)

1. No plastic containers in micro.

2. No water bottles in freezer.

3. No plastic wrap in microwave. Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.

Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc.

He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons. Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked,the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

Can Doing Intervals Burn Belly Fat?

According to an Australian fat loss expert, Professor Steve Boucher, he says that "high intensity intermittent exercise (i.e. intervals) may result in greater fat loss in the abdomen".

Basically, intervals burn stomach fat FIRST, over all other sources of fat on the body. Nothing else, not crunches, nor cardio, has ever been shown to result in stomach fat spot reduction.

This is big news. If you want to lose belly fat, you have to be doing intervals.

Choose any piece of cardio equipment (preferably an upright stationary bike or treadmill) and warm-up for 3 minutes unless you've already done a strength workout before hand. After warming up, increase the intensity (subjective 8 out of 10 level of intensity) so that you are able to maintain that level for 60 seconds (if on the bike it should feel like you're peddling through mud). Then drop the intensity back down to a subjective 3 out of 10 level of intensity for 120 seconds. To start perform that cycle 3 times.

Remember losing fat doesn't have to be impossible, but it will require to give some effort. As my mom used to say "Anything in life worth getting is hard to get".

Q & A

Question:
I'm soaking my nuts right now I forgot how you said to cook them, is it at very low temperature and how long?

Answer:
Hey Sandy,

Great question. Soak them for at least 8-12 hours in water with a teaspoon or more of sea salt, preferably sea salt not normal table salt. Then strain and rinse them thoroughly. Place them on a big cookie sheet with them spread out. Place in the oven at about 150-200 degrees Fahrenheit for about 8-10 hours or until they are crispy but not burnt or starting to have a burnt taste.

Ideally, this should be done with all nuts, seeds and legumes and beans except flaxseed which doesn't soak very well. Most seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, sesame, etc) will sprout quite nicely thus making them easier to digest and increase the nutrient profile. To sprout, perform same process as above however before putting them in the oven, continue rinsing them periodically throughout the day (2-3 times) until sprouts are visable. Depending on the seed, it may take 2-3 days to sprout. Afterwards, place them on a cookie sheet as above.

Sugar - The Disease Generator

My friend Vreni Gurd, a C.H.E.K. Practitioner Level 3 and Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach Level 2, wrote an interesting newsletter on sugar and its high correlation to heart disease and obesity which I believe you all would benefit from reading. Please see below.

On some level most of us know that sugar is not healthy, but I don't think the majority of us have any idea truly how devastating sugar is. And reducing one's sugar consumption is challenging as it is highly addictive, causing withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, mood swings, depression, fatigue, and cravings.

Even as early as the 60s, the research of Alfred Lopez repeatedly pointed to sugar as being a significant player in the development of heart disease, and then Ahrens' work in the 70s found the same thing. Sugar causes an increase in the adhesiveness of the blood platelets, which may be the reason for its role in heart disease.

Sugar is also implicated as a causative factor in type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, kidney disease, liver disease, obesity, and depression, and is important in the growth of cancerous tumors, as cancer cells love sugar. Every tablespoon of sugar depresses the immune system for up to 6 hours. If you find that you are constantly sick, sugar may be a large part of the reason.

Sugar also encourages candida albicans overgrowth, a fungus that starts in the digestive tract and can spread to the internal organs and the respiratory system. Common symptoms may include yeast infections, digestive problems, or asthma.

Sugar is far more fattening for most people than fat is. The leading source of calories for kids and teens is from carbonated soft drinks and juice containing high-fructose corn syrup and sugar, and as a result they are becoming obese and developing type 2 diabetes at an alarming rate. In liquid form, sugars are very problematic as usually they are consumed as extra calories as opposed to substituting for solid foods.

High fructose corn syrup (often listed as "fructose glucose" on labels in Canada) is a crystalline fructose or hydrolized fructose product that is manufactured in the lab (genetically modified corn) that came onto the market in about 1970, and because it is so inexpensive, it is used as a preservative in all kinds of foods one would not expect. I have even noticed it as an ingredient in those touted-as-healthy low-calorie frozen dinners!

It is now everywhere in processed foods, including crackers, baked goods, salad dressings, ketchup, medications, and obviously, soft drinks. High-fructose corn syrup is particularly dangerous, because unlike sucrose which raises blood-glucose levels, HFC syrup converts into triglycerides and adipose tissue within an hour of ingestion. When I am feeling particularly cynical, I wonder why the term "sugar diabetes" has all but disappeared from the lexicon. Is it because it is more profitable to treat disease rather than to encourage the removal of HFC syrup and other forms of processed sugar from the marketplace?
So read labels carefully. No form of sugar is healthy, so know that any word that ends in "ose" is a form of sugar, such as glucose, sucrose, fructose, maltose, lactose, dextrose, galactose etc. Also watch for "monosaccharides" or "disaccharides", or various "syrups" which are also fancy names for sugar.

Almost all sugar on the market is highly processed, and as such the nutrient-dense molasses of the sugar-cane plant has been stripped away. The only sugar on the market that is a whole food is from Brazil, and is called Rapadura which literally means, "unseparated sugar". If you must use sugar, this is the only one that can be recommended. "Sucanat", "turbinado", "raw sugar", "demerara", "muscovado", and "evaporated cane juice", are all examples of separated sugar and should be avoided.

To wean yourself off sugar, you may find it helpful to take a gram or two a day of omega 3 fish oils, to reduce the cravings.
